Harambee Stars fans are on the lookout for busses to ferry them to Malawi for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers but it will be a tedious trip for all involved.

Harambee Stars players will leave the country on Sunday to Malawi for their 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Burundi and Ivory Coast.

Kenya will host their rivals at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe with the country lacking an approved stadium.

While the players will fly, a section of Kenyan fans have expressed their willingness to travel to Lilongwe by road to cheer the team and give them the much-needed push.

Already, fans umbrella body the Kenya Football Fans Federation (KEFOFA) is in talks with the government, corporate entities and well-wishers to raise enough funds to ferry fans to Lilongwe for the crucial matches which will determine Harambee Stars chances’ of qualifying for the World Cup.

KEFOFA revealed early this week that they already have one bus to ferry fans but their target is at least five buses which will leave the country early to be in Lilongwe a day before Kenya’s first match against Burundi on June 7.

“KEFOFA is not sponsored by anyone so all fans need is to by a t-shirt for Ksh3,000 and they will join the group. We are raising funds through the sale of these t-shirts,” said KEFOFA CEO Shem Okottah.

However, travelling to Malawi by road will be a long a tedious journey that will last over two days for the fans, given Nairobi to Lilongwe is 1,993.2km that takes over 30 hours.

Their journey will see them travel through Tanzania before getting to Malawi. It starts with a four-hour trip from Nairobi to Arusha, followed by a six-hour drive to Dodoma. By now, it would be evening depending on the time they leave Nairobi, and can choose to spend the night in Dodoma.

From Dodoma, it will be a four-hour trip to Iringa in central Tanzania, the proceed to Makambako, a journey that will take two hours. From here, it will be a three-hour journey to Mbeya, south west Tanzania, by which it will be evening.

The supporters can choose to have another layover here after the nine-hour journey before proceeding on the final stretch of their trip.

From Mbeya, it will be a two-and-a-half-hour trip via the Nyika National Park in northern Malawi, on the Zambian border, followed by a four-and-a-half-hour ride to Lilongwe, their final destination.

While they might not spend much on transport if they manage to secure the busses, the fans will need to have enough money for the numerous stopovers as well as accommodation while in Lilongwe.

Harambee Stars fans have easily travelled to neighbouring countries like Uganda and Tanzania in past years but the trip to Malawi will be a whole different experience.

After the clash against Burundi, Kenya will face African champions Ivory Coast on June 11 and the fans plan to stay on and offer support for both matches.

For those planning to travel by air, the journey will take two hours and 15 minutes and will set them back between Ksh58,000 and Ksh77,000 for a flight ticket.
