Matasi wins court reprieve halting FKF’s match-fixing suspension, allowing his return to football pending full hearing.

Harambee Stars and Kakamega Homeboyz goalkeeper Patrick Matasi has won a temporary reprieve in his match-fixing saga after a Kakamega High Court overturned the Football Kenya Federation’s (FKF) suspension that had barred him from participating in all football-related activities.

The 37-year-old, who has been at the center of controversy after a secretly recorded video suggested his involvement in match manipulation, had been provisionally banned by FKF on March 27th for 90 days.

However, in a major twist, Matasi successfully challenged the decision through legal channels. On Tuesday, March 8th, Judge S.N Mbungi of the Kakamega High Court issued a conservatory order halting FKF’s action and allowing the veteran goalkeeper to return to football pending a full hearing of the case.

"I have seen the application dated 28.3.2025 and the supporting affidavit, I have also seen the affidavit of service sworn by Collins Kigen showing that the Application was duly served upon the Respondent. I have seen a stamp impression on a copy returned after service. Therefore, I am satisfied that the Application was properly served upon the respondent,” the ruling read in part as per Flashscore.

“The respondent has not responded to the Application nor attended court. I deem the application to be unopposed. I do issue a conservatory order restraining the Respondent whether by themselves or any person acting on the express orders of the Respondent from acting on the Respondent's communication dated 27.3.25 that suspended the applicant Matasi from all FKF-sanctioned events and competitions pending hearing and determination of the petition."

Top 5 Best Clubs in Kenyan Premier League History

The top five clubs in Kenyan Premier League history have helped shape the country's football legacy through their historic achievements, passionate fanbases, and consistent contributions to the growth of the sport.

The court also directed FKF to respond to the petition within 30 days, setting June 4th as the date for mention and further directions.

Matasi, who has previously played for AFC Leopards, Tusker, Posta Rangers, and Ethiopian giants Saint George, was allegedly captured in a leaked video nodding and engaging in a conversation about fixing the outcome of a football match.

The footage, recorded without his knowledge from a backseat position, caused a storm in the local football scene.

Despite the weight of the allegations, Matasi has maintained a low profile.

The controversy comes at a time when Matasi’s national team career has faced a downturn.

He was dropped by former coach Engin Firat after a heavy 4-1 loss to Cameroon during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers and has since missed several national team call-ups.

His exclusion continued under new coach Benni McCarthy, with Ian Otieno currently favored between the posts.
