Eddie Howe remains convinced that Paris Saint-Germain were awarded a dubious penalty against his Newcastle side

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has slammed the decision to award a penalty to Paris Saint-Germain during the Magpies’ 1-1 draw in the UEFA Champions League at the Parc des Princes

Newcastle denied PSG victory

Newcastle were on the brink of a famous victory over PSG, which would have seen them complete a heroic double over the French champions after also claiming a 4-1 win over Les Parisiens in England last month.

The Magpies led for a large portion of the match after going in front through Alexander Isak midway through the first half and were moments away from a 1-0 win before conceding a penalty in additional time.

PSG’s captain on the night, Kylian Mbappe, scored the resulting spot-kick to rescue a point for the home side, much to the dismay of Newcastle’s gaffer.

Howe criticises penalty decision against PSG

PSG’s penalty stirred controversy after the ball appeared to hit Valentino Livramento’s chest before striking his arm, and the decision to award a spot-kick did not go down well in the Magpies’ camp.

Speaking after the match against PSG, Newcastle’s Howe lamented the late penalty decision, telling TNTSports, “I don’t think that was a penalty. We know that when it hits a body part first and his hands are low, it's not a penalty. I feel really flat, but pleased with what the players have given.”

Despite Howe’s complaints, Newcastle were also lucky not to concede a penalty earlier in the match against PSG when Lewis Miley also handled the ball in the 18-yard-box, but the infringement was overlooked by referee Szymon Marciniak.
