PSG vs Lyon will highlight Ligue 1 gameweek 29, with other exciting fixtures in tow
According to ex-France international Patrice Evra, Paris Saint-Germain play in Ligue 1 “with a cigar in their mouths” but against Lyon, they will have to drop the swagger when they play one of the strongest teams in French top division history.
Despite the cash inflow and the array star names in their recent history, the current PSG team have a long way to go before reaching the levels of dominance that Lyon managed in their pomp.
Between 2002 and 2008, it was Lyon who played with the Cigars as they dominated Ligue 1 with seven consecutive league titles as Juninho and co obliterated every challenger for the league title in the most dominant spell ever recorded in the French top division.
This season, as in the last few, Lyon have failed to live up to the standards they set in Ligue 1 and currently sit perfectly midtable in 10th position, 25 points behind PSG, who are on course for thier second title in a row.
Les Parisiens can only dream of reaching Lyon’s record of seven consecutive titles having managed only four in a row at their best, but they will look at Sunday's game as a chance to get one over Les Gones
Key players in PSG vs Lyon
PSG’s title charge has mainly been carried on the shoulders of their star-studded attack of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe who have contributed 45 of Les Parisiens’ 68 goals.
With Neymar’s injury, Messi and Mbappe have been left to carry the burden in attack for PSG and both players will be looking to improve on their nightmarish performance in the last game where the league leaders fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to Rennes.
For Lyon, former Arsenal man Alexander Lacazette has been the force keeping them in the top half of the table with his 17 Ligue 1 goals this season.
Only Mbappe and Lille’s Jonathan David have scored more this campaign, and Lyon will need Lacazette to be in superb form if they are to have any chance against PSG.
