How Gaspo FC's internal issues led to their relegation from Kenya's top women's football league, ending a once-promising journey.

A fortnight ago, the once-celebrated FKF Women’s Premier League side, Gaspo Women FC found itself in the depths of an unprecedented crisis leading to its relegation from the top tier of Kenyan women's football.

This fall from grace was not just a blow to the team's competitive aspirations but a tragic unraveling of a club that had, for years, been a beacon of hope and achievement in the women's game.

The journey of Gaspo FC, a team established in 2006, reads like a tale of relentless ambition, marked by moments of triumph and adversity.

From its humble beginnings as a youth side participating in various tournaments, Gaspo's narrative was one of aspiration, symbolized by their memorable participation in the East Africa Cup in Moshi, Tanzania.

Their commitment to excellence saw them climbing the ranks to the FKF Women’s Premier League by 2016, although they faced immediate relegation.

Yet, they rose from the ashes, securing a top-flight return in 2017 and consistently finishing among the top teams, with a memorable challenge for the title in the last two seasons.

The last season was particularly noteworthy as Gaspo pushed the champions Vihiga Queens to the brink.

The inclusion of former Harambee Stars coach Jacob 'Ghost' Mulee last year was a testament to their aspirations and the seriousness with which they approached their quest for glory.

From finishing in the top five since their promotion in 2018 and challenging for the title, Gaspo had carved a niche for itself as a formidable force in Kenyan women’s football.

However, the wheels began to come off this season, unveiling the troubles that had been silently brewing within the club.

The suspension of club boss Edward Githua by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) over allegations of sexual offenses against players marked a significant turning point.

This scandal brought to light the vulnerabilities and challenges faced by female athletes, casting a shadow over the club’s accomplishments and contributing to a toxic environment that led to its operational shutdown.

The departure of key players to other clubs, in search of a safer and more stable environment, underscores the magnitude of the crisis at Gaspo.

Goalkeeper Pauline Kathuruh and midfielders Jennifer Mueni and Miriam Orapidi, among others, left for defending champions Vihiga Queens and other teams, leaving a void that was palpably felt throughout the club.

The final blow came when Gaspo FC failed to honor their last three league matches, a decision that led to their relegation as per the FKF rules and regulations.

The match that sealed their fate, against the Madira Soccer Assassins, was a poignant reminder of the team's fall from grace.

The opponents' journey to Nairobi, only to find no team to compete against, was a stark illustration of Gaspo's current predicament.

This relegation is not just a demotion to a lower league; it represents a significant setback for a team that had shown so much promise and had come so close to achieving greatness.

The team's failure to participate in crucial matches is a reflection of the internal problems that have plagued the club, overshadowing the hard work and dedication of the players and staff.

The repercussions of Gaspo's relegation extend beyond the loss of top-flight status. Teams that had earned points against them in the second round were stripped of these points, although the results from the first leg stand.

The story of Gaspo FC is a sorrowful tale of potential unfulfilled, dreams dashed, and a stark reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in the world of sports.

It serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of good governance, player welfare, and the need for a supportive and safe environment for athletes to thrive.

As Gaspo faces its future in the second tier, one can only hope that the team will find a way to overcome its current challenges, rebuild, and once again rise to prominence.

For now, the Gaspo community mourns the loss of what could have been and reflects on the journey that brought them to this point.

The legacy of Gaspo FC, marred by controversy and relegation, will serve as a lesson for other clubs and the governing bodies of football in Kenya and beyond.

The path to redemption and recovery will be long and fraught with challenges, but it is a path that Gaspo must navigate if it wishes to return to its former glory and honor the spirit of competition, resilience, and unity that football embodies.
