Real Madrid forward Rodrygo called the referee’s attention to a sandwich that had been thrown by an Osasuna fan
Osasuna are in hot water with LaLiga after a fan at their El Sadar stadium threw a sandwich onto the pitch in their 2-0 loss to Real Madrid, leading to the Pamplona-based club now facing possible fines for the incident.
Osasuna vs Real Madrid halted after sandwich-throwing incident
Osasuna and Real Madrid were still deadlocked at 0-0 a few minutes past the hour mark when Los Blancos forward Rodrygo Goes signalled to the referee that a projectile had been thrown onto the pitch in his direction by one of the Osasuna fans, and on further inspection by the match official, Munuera Montero, the object turned out to be a sandwich.
The referee picked up the sandwich and handed it over to one of the protocol officers present for the match and asked that the match continue after an announcement had been made on the stadium’s public address system asking fans not to throw objects on the pitch.
He later documented the experience in his post-match log, saying, “Throwing objects: In the 64th minute the game is stopped due to the throwing of a sandwich on the pitch, which does not impact any person. The game resumes after the corresponding public address notice.”
Real Madrid gingered by the sandwich incident
If the Osasuna fan hoped to dampen Real Madrid’s morale with the offensive gesture, he achieved the exact opposite and instead enraged Los Blancos to put two late goals past his team on the way to what became a comfortable 2-0 victory.
Just over 10 minutes after the sandwich incident, Federico Valverde scored Real Madrid’s first goal of the night and Marco Asensio added a second in extra time to heap more misery on Osasuna, whose fans had also abused Vinicius Junior during the minute silence held for victims of the recent earthquake tragedy.
