Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has fired a subtle dig at Andre Onana after the goalkeeper claimed the Red Devils are better than his team Lyon.

Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has hit out at goalkeeper Andre Onana following his comments over his team Olympique Lyon.

Ahead of Manchester United’s Europa League quarter-final first leg meeting with the Ligue 1 side, Onana said the Premier League club are superior to their French opponents despite their struggles this season.

Matic did not take those comments kindly when it was put to him what Onana had said, and fired back in subtle fashion.

“Onana said they’re way better than us? When you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history, you need to take care what you’re talking about. If it was [Edwin] Van der Sar, [Peter] Schmeichel or [David] De Gea saying that, okay, but Onana, he’s one of the worst,” the Serbian midfielder said.

Onana had claimed United, who are languishing in 13th position in Premier League, are better than Lyon, who are fifth in Ligue 1, before the opening leg in France on Thursday.

“We all know the importance of this game, so we will go there with a winning mentality. It’s not our best season, but we still have something big to win, so we will go for it,” Onana said as per Express.

“It’s a very good team; we know some of them, but I don’t think we have to focus about them. It’s more about us, what we’re going to do. I think we are better than them, we just have to go there and show who we are.

“If we go there with a winning mentality and we are focused, we stay compact together and we follow the game plan, we will be winning the game. Of course, it’s not going to be easy, but I think we are way better than them.”

United are looking for Europa League glory this season which will come with the incentive of Champions League football qualification next season following their inability to finish in the top five in the Premier League this term.
