AS Roma transfer target Joseph Okumu faced disappointment as his team Stade de Reims suffered a 3-0 defeat to Shimizu S-Pulse in a pre-season friendly at IAI Stadium on Saturday.

The match that is part of Reims' preparatory tour in Japan for the upcoming French Ligue 1 season saw Okumu leave the pitch after 60 minutes of play reflecting a challenging day for the central defender.

The loss marked a downturn in the Reims' fortunes following their 1-1 draw with Jubilo Iwata three days earlier.

From the onset Luka Elsner’s squad displayed aggressive tactics pushing forward with intent.

In the 15th minute Junya Ito narrowly missed a long ball that could have put Reims in a scoring position.

Shortly after Keito Nakamura's shot inside the box led to a corner signaling a strong offensive from the visiting team.

Despite these efforts and a striking attempt by Ito hitting the post at the 16th minute mark Reims could not capitalize on their opportunities.

The tides turned when Shimizu S-Pulse utilizing quick counter-attacks, broke the deadlock with a precise shot from the edge of the area at the 27th minute.

The hosts doubled their advantage right before halftime thanks to a goal from Lucas Braga leaving Reims in a precarious position as they regrouped for the second half.

Returning with determination Reims continued their offensive pursuits.

Substitutes brought fresh energy notably Reda Khadra whose cross-shot was narrowly saved by the opposing goalkeeper early in the second half.

Despite several attempts from Nakamura and sustained pressure Reims struggled to find the back of the net.

Shimizu S-Pulse maintained a tight defense and occasionally threatened through rapid transitions one of which nearly extended their lead in the 70th minute.

Shimizu scored their third goal in the dying moments sealing a comprehensive victory.

The result was particularly poignant for Okumu who is currently under the spotlight due to potential transfer moves with AS Roma showing significant interest in the Kenyan defender.

Okumu’s performance in Japan could be pivotal as speculation mounts over his future.

The former KAA Gent player who joined Reims last July on a five-year contract has been an integral part of the team’s defense.

Reim's final game on the Japan tour next week will provide another opportunity for redemption and tactical reassessment as they head to the 2024/2024 season.
