Omweri, who is the only non-FKF Premier League player currently in the Harambee Stars set up preparing for the Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar, is determined to make the final squad for the 2024 CHAN.
Budding Nairobi United midfielder Isaac Omweri is on a mission to cement his place in the Harambee Stars squad for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The 20-year-old has been turning heads in the National Super League (NSL) and is the sole representative from the division in the team currently preparing for the Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar this January.
Omweri’s inclusion in interim coach Francis Kimanzi’s training camp comes as part of an effort to identify promising talents ahead of the tournament. While competing against seasoned midfielders, the young playmaker is focused on proving his mettle and earning a spot in the final 24-man squad.

Harambee Stars goalkeeper Byrne Odhiambo hails Arnold Origi's impact as Francis Kimanzi's charges gear up for Mapinduzi Cup
Harambee Stars keeper Byrne Odhiambo has hailed the impact of Arnold Origi as new goalkeeping coach as Francis Kimanzi's charges gear up for the 2025 Mapinduzi Cup.
Omweri has been a pivotal figure for Nairobi United, where his dynamic partnership with Duncan Omala—Benson Omala’s younger brother—has propelled the team to the summit of the NSL. The midfielder also showcased his potential on a trial with Swedish third-tier side Vasserlund FC last September, scoring a goal and providing an assist in a 4-0 triumph over Kungsängen.
Speaking about his national team call-up, Omweri couldn’t hide his joy.
“I am feeling happy. It was a surprise for me. I do not even know how to put it in words, but bottom line, I am just happy,” he said.
The transition from club football to the demanding environment of the national team has been challenging, but Omweri sees it as an opportunity to grow.

“The training has really been intense compared to my team in the Super League. I feel like I am gaining more from the training, and come next time, I will even be more ready,” he explained.
Under the no-nonsense guidance of Kimanzi, Omweri is aware of the stakes.
“When you get called upon here, you have to be confident you will make the final squad in order for him to find it easier to choose you for the big one, which is the CHAN tournament,” he added.
Omweri’s ultimate goal is to secure a spot in the starting lineup and contribute meaningfully to the team’s success.
“I want to make the starting lineup in order to get the playing time I need and to also help the country,” he said.
The midfielder has embraced the challenges of training alongside more experienced players, seeing it as an opportunity to adapt and improve.
“It was a challenge, but you have to adapt to whoever you find, and you have to work with him, so you have to get used to it,” he concluded.
With his raw talent and determination, Omweri is poised to make a strong case for inclusion in the Mapinduzi Cup squad and beyond. His journey from NSL standout to potential national team regular reflects the depth of Kenya’s footballing talent and offers hope for the future of the Harambee Stars.
