Finidi George explains NPFL return
Finidi resigned as Super Eagles coach amidst the team's underwhelming performance in their recent World Cup qualifiers, where they managed only a single point from two matches against Benin and South Africa.
Following his resignation from the national team, Rivers United have now unveiled Finidi George as their new head coach.
In his explanation, Finidi revealed that he joined Port Harcourt to give back to the club where he began his football journey with Sharks of Port Harcourt.
"I am very happy to be here, this (Port Harcourt) is where I grew up - starting my football career in Sharks. I left this place a footballer and I am back as a coach," he said in a video on Twitter.
The former Ajax and Real Betis winger expressed his inspiration for the new challenge, stating;
The results from last season inspired me to come back as a Port Harcourt boy to see how I can impact a little bit. I have been working in Abia State for a while, and I think this is an opportunity for me to give back, and that is why I have decided to take this challenge to come back."
Finidi's last managerial stint in the league was with the Peoples Elephant, where he led the team to the Nigeria Premier Football League title in his debut season as a coach.
However, he departed before the end of the 2023/2024 season to take up the Super Eagles assignment back in May.
With his wealth of experience and the desire to give back to his hometown, Finidie's return to Rivers is expected to be a significant boost for the club as they aim to build on their recent successes and make an impact in the upcoming season.
