Week 17 of the NPFL 2023 season bore witness to a breach of security at Plateau United's New Jos Stadium, and an assault on match officials.

Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Plateau United have had three points and three goals deducted from their accumulated points and goals following the physical assault on match officials by their fans.

The development was made known by the league's body, the Interim Management Committee (IMC) following a breach of security at the New Jos Stadium in week 17 of the 2023 season.

IMC fines Plateau United N2.5 million

A lengthy list of sanctions following the act carried out by the fans of the 2017 NPFL champions, will now see them pay the sum of N2.5 million in addition to the points and goals deduction from their total accrued.

A breakdown of the total sum means that Plateau United are being fined N1 million for failing to provide proper match-day security, and another N500,000 for failing to stop unauthorised access to restricted areas.

For the assault on match officials, N1 million is to be paid as compensation to the four match officials (N250,000 per official). Assault on the official also attracted a deduction of three points and three goals.

Plateau United to play final league game without fans

Meanwhile, the Jos club are out of running to secure a spot in the 2023 Super 6 playoff that could have seen them win the league title again, for the first time since 2017.
