NPFL: Ogunbote apologizes over Shooting Stars finish

The 2023 NPFL regular season reached its crescendo on Sunday, with 6 teams securing their places in the Super 6 playoff, and 4 others, relegated to the NNL.

Shooting Stars head coach Gbenga Ogunbote has apologised to the club supporters over their failure to qualify for the 2023 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Super 6 playoff.

The final day of the 2023 regular season saw the Oluyole Warriors play out a 0-0 draw with eight-time champions Enyimba at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, their eighth of the season in 18 matches, alongside five wins and five draws.

Ogunbote unhappy with Shooting Stars finish

Speaking after his team's final match of the season, the gaffer expressed unhappiness that the targeted goals of the team were not achieved.

“The first thing is to apologise to the supporters because much was expected from us," Ogunbote said after the tie in Ibadan.

“We seem to have it, but unfortunately, when the season started, we couldn’t replicate what we had in the pre-season, due to some challenges in the form of distractions, which did not allow the team to perform the way we expected.

“On behalf of the team, I want to apologise for that," he added.

Enyimba off to Super 6 thanks to draw with Shooting Stars

The final day of the 2023 season saw Enyimba, Remo Stars, and Sunshine Stars all secure needed results to join already qualified Bendel Insurance, Lobi Stars and defending champions Rivers United in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Wikki Tourists completed the quad of teams to get relegated to the Nigeria National League (NNL).
