Matano cuts ties with the club after rejoining the team at the start of the 2024-25 season but his premature exit didn't go down well with Kalekwa

Sofapaka president Elly Kalekwa is not worried about the departure of coach Robert Matano who is set to take charge of struggling Kenya Police.

The experienced tactician returned at the helm of Batoto ba Mungu at the start of the season for a second spell after guiding them to their maiden FKF Premier League title in 2009.

However, he has not had the greatest of starts as the former champions are ninth on the log with 10 points and Matano was in the dressing room as Kenya Police snatched a late 1-1 draw with league leaders KCB on November 26.

Kalekwa told SportsBoom that Sofapaka will be stable without Matano's services and that the club is bigger than an individual. “Whatever you are hearing does not scare us, if he (Matano) is going to Kenya Police so what, did anybody die?” Kalekwa quipped.

He continued: "It is now too much. Matano and I worked together at Sofapaka between 2008-2010 and he left, did Sofapaka die, no? No coach scares me, this team is bigger than any individual so he can just go.”

Matano’s last game in charge’ was a 1-1 draw against Mara Sugar. Nicknamed the 'Lion' Matano's arrival at Kenya Police spells the end of Beldine Odemba's tenure.

Odemba, the second female to ever coach a male’s team in the top division, will now concentrate with the national women’s team, the Harambee Starlets who travel to Morocco for a Four-Nation tournament later this week.

Police sacked their entire technical bench led by Salim Babu two weeks ago. The law enforcers have had a rocky start to the new season and are languishing at 15th place with eight points-13 behind table-toppers KCB.
