Evolution Cup was postponed till March over Naira Scarcity and Fuel Hike
The Evolution Cup organizers have announced that the 2023 edition of the Nationwide League One (NLO) preseason tournament will be postponed due to naira scarcity and fuel price increases.
The Evolution Cup was earlier scheduled to take place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne from February 13th–19th but has now been shifted to March 13th–19th, 2023.
The project strategist of Evolution Cup, Olatoye Olawale, said following the recent development with naira notes and fuel, the preseason tournament has been postponed.
He added that the postponement was to give consideration to participating teams for their logistics.
"We had to shift the tournament by a month so that the teams could adequately prepare for it. The situation across the country is quite worrisome, and we can’t just leave logistics to the participating clubs, it’s important that we help them in some way.
"Teams will travel down to Ikenne and also feed their players during those periods. It’s important that we consider how they want to go about that when there is naira scarcity and fuel hike,” Olatoye said.
He highlighted that the postponement is just for a month and that the 10 teams are ready to participate.
"February numbers are just like March, so we are postponing the tournament from February 13-19 to March 13-19. All the teams are ready to showcase their players for the football event,” he said.
SGFC Athletics won the maiden edition of the Evolution Cup.
