Nicholas Muyoti: Who is Kenyan coach set to join Benni McCarthy at Harambee Stars?

Former Kenyan international Nicholas Moyoti is primed for a role as assistant to incoming Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy and here is everything you need to know about him.

Former Kenyan international Nicholas Muyoti has been identified as the man set to serve as the local assistant to South African legend Benni McCarthy during his rein as Harambee Stars coach.

McCarthy is already in Kenya ahead of his unveiling set to take place at Nairobi’s KICC on Monday March 3 and the composition of his backroom staff is nearly complete with Muyoti and South African Vasili Manousakis set to be his assistants while ex-Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs will be his keeper trainer.

Muyoti has won the race from a host of local coaches, this coming just a month since he left Nairobi City Stars for Nairobi United in January.

Nicholas Muyoti was born on September 8, 1976 in Nairobi.

Nicholas Muyoti went to Our Lady of Mercy Primary School before moving to Mumias Boys Primary School. He then proceeded to Amukura Secondary School in Busia county and then Nairobi's Upper Hill School, where he honed his football skills further.

While still studying at Upper Hill, Nicholas Muyoti, who played as a defender and midfielder, was signed by lower league side Kenyatta Hospital in 1996 and played for the side until 1997.

He would join AFC Leopards, where he played for five years until 2002, after which he moved to Thika United for a three-year stint that lasted util 2005.

In 2006, Nicholas Muyoti joined paid ranks abroad, signing for Sporting Afrique of Singapore, where he was named captain, but left the same year and joined Churchill Brothers and then Sporting Clube de Goa, both in India, where he played for one year each.

Nicholas Muyoti would return home in 2008 to rejoin Thika United, playing until 2009, when he signed for Sher Karuturi. A one-year stint with Sofapaka then followed in 2010 after which he made a sensational return at AFC Leopards in 2011.

It was while at Leopards that Nicholas Muyoti retired and the club integrated him into the coaching staff, making him assistant coach from 2012, and he worked until 2014 when he secured his first job as head coach at Oserian FC.

Nicholas Muyoti left Oserian FC in 2016 to return to AFC Leopards, as an assistant, but the following year, he was unveiled as head coach of Zetech University, leaving midway to link up with his former team Thika United.

Between 2018 and 2019, Nicholas Muyoti worked as head coach of Nzoia Sugar after which he joined Kakamega Homeboyz in the FKF Premier League, coaching Abana Abeingo until 2021.

From September 2021, Nicholas Muyoti was appointed head coach of Nairobi City Stars following the departure of Sanjin Alagic, who had secured top flight promotion the previous year.

Simba wa Nairobi handed Muyoti a three-year contract and he did a commendable job, keeping the side in the top flight in his first two seasons, until he took them even higher in 2023-24, when they finished an impressive sixth.

It was during that season that Micholas Muyoti came close to leaving, after being heavily linked with the Shabana job, but he opted to stay. He, however, left in January 2025 to join ambitious National Super League side Nairobi United.

Nicholas Muyoti, who earned 17 caps for Harambee Stars while scoring two goals, captained the national team and was part of the side that won the 2002 Castle Lager trophy.

He is credited with shaping the careers of forwards Samuel Kapen, Kelvin Etemsei and most recently Mohammed Bajaber during his stint as City Stars coach.

Nicholas Muyoti will now hope to use his vast experience in Kenyan football to assist new Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy as they look to create a competitive and winning national team.
