1. Tactical inadequacies

Choosing the best formation to counter the opponent's tactics, such us switching from a 4-3-3 to a 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1 depending on whether defending or attacking could be an issue. Deciding  when and where to press the opponent, whether to press high up the pitch or sit back  in a defensive block could pose another challenge.

Getting used to the new culture under McCarthy especially in the build-up play, choosing how to progress the ball from  the defensive line, whether to play short passess through the midfield or switch play to the opposite side could be something tough to implement because of maybe contrasting ideas.

2. Technical deficiencies

Kenyan players are not gifted technically owing to the fact that most of them honed their skills within the country. Poor ball control and first touch must be addressed.

Stars' Rooney Onyango for example, missed one-vs-one opportunity against Zimbabwe in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in November last year. He went for power instead of precision, blasting his shot wide.

3. Strength and conditioning

It involves a variety of training methods  that improves the physical performance and reduce injury risk in players. Muyoti has to find proper ladder drills and cone drills as well as try to improve the nutrition of Harambee Stars players.

Conditioning drills simulate game scenarios to reduce risk of injury. In order to see the department improve, fitness coaches and sports scientists must be involved, which might drain the Stars financially, making it impossible to implement.

4. Ideological differences

The way things are done in South Africa is different from Kenya, making it tougher for Muyoti to strike a cordial working relationship in the Harambee Stars set up.

5. Lack of professionalism

While the vice has been weeded out in Europe and other regions, it largely remains unresolved in Kenya. Muyoti will have to explain to Kenyan players to do things on their own without necessarily having to be followed or monitored. Attending personal training when not in club duty is something that Muyoti will have to keep an eye on.

Even though all pointers indicate that the task awaiting Nicholas Muyoti is not an easy one but an essential one, it must also be made clear that cooperation and teamwork will be the key.

As Muyoti readies himself for the new challenge, the country at large must rally behind one of their own.
