The Partenopei are making plans in case they lose Victor Osimhen this summer

Napoli have reportedly initiated contact with Chelsea to explore the possibility of acquiring former Inter striker Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian, who spent the 2023-24 campaign on loan with Roma, has emerged as a potential replacement for Victor Osimhen, who is likely to depart this Napoli this summer.

Potential departure of Osimhen

Aurelio De Laurentiis and the Napoli board are reportedly considering cashing in on their star forward, Osimhen, this summer with Arsenal the frontrunners for the Nigerian’s signature. Osimhen's departure would leave a significant gap in Napoli's attacking line, necessitating the acquisition of a high-caliber replacement.

Romelu Lukaku has been identified as a prime candidate to fill this role. La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Napoli have made an initial enquiry with Chelsea regarding Lukaku’s availability, signaling their intent to secure a top-tier striker to lead their attack in the upcoming season.

Financial hurdles in Lukaku deal

The negotiations between Napoli and Chelsea could face significant financial hurdles since Lukaku has a release clause in his Chelsea contract valued at €43 million, a figure that Napoli currently considers too steep.

While Napoli are massively interested in acquiring Lukaku, they are hoping to negotiate a lower fee or explore the possibility of another loan deal. However, Chelsea are reportedly not interested in loaning the Belgian striker out for a third consecutive season. Lukaku is under contract at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2026, which means any permanent transfer would require a substantial financial commitment from Napoli.

The striker has a particularly close relationship with Napoli's new coach, Antonio Conte, with whom he won the Scudetto during their time together at Inter Milan. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Conte and Lukaku have maintained regular communication, which has now turned towards a possible move to Napoli.
