The former Portugal national team assistant captain will visit an East African nation to celebrate a sports club's 80th anniversary.

Former Portugal national team and Manchester United star, Luis Carlos Almeida da Cunha, commonly known as Nani, is set to grace an East African country with his presence next month.

The retired footballer has confirmed his visit to Ethiopia, where he will participate in the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Mechal Sports Club.

Nani, whose illustrious career includes notable periods at Manchester United and on the Portuguese national team, expressed his enthusiasm about the upcoming trip.

"Hello guys, here is Nani. I'm so happy and honored to receive your invitation for the eightieth anniversary of Macau Sport Club. As the land of origin, Ethiopia has a very special place in my heart. So I'm looking forward to visit Addis Babam and celebrating all the achievements and the history of the club. See you soon," he stated.

The event, scheduled for July 14th, will feature a match between Mechal Sports Club and Kitara FC, the reigning Ugandan Cup champions, at the Addis Abeba Stadium.

This matchup is anticipated to be a highlight of the club’s anniversary festivities, drawing football fans from across the region.

In addition to his presence at the game, Nani is expected to engage in several other activities during his stay.

Notably, his sports academy is set to sign a cooperation agreement with Mechal Sports Club, an initiative that promises to bolster sports development in the region.

The Portuguese Embassy in Ethiopia, under the leadership of Ambassador Luisa Fragoso, has been instrumental in coordinating the event.

Fragoso confirmed that the embassy is actively working to facilitate the attendance of other notable Portuguese athletes and sports personalities.

Mechal Football Club is also in contention to lift this year’s Ethiopian Premier League trophy.

The club has collected 57 points from 28 games this season only a point behind the league leaders CBE SA.
