Namwamba has revealed the details of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament that Kenya is reportedly set to host, as well as made updates on stadia.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has confirmed that the 2024 African Nations Championship will be held in Nairobi and Kakamega.

According to multiple reports, Kenya successfully bid to host the tournament, which is dedicated specifically for local-based players to try and stake their claims to become regulars for their respective main national teams.

Namwamba was facing the senate on Wednesday noon as they sought to grill him on the progress he has made while in office since his appointment just over a year ago, and it was then that he reiterated that the tournament will be taking place in Kenya.

“We have also won the rights to host the CHAN Championships which will be hosted in Nairobi and Kakamega,” Namwamba said when asked about the progression of infrastructure completion.

“We have every intention to spread the benefits of international competitions across the country. This Saturday, the 25th, we will be flagging off the CECAFA U18 Football tournament, bringing together eight countries across the CECAFA region, and it will be hosted in Kisumu and Kakamega.

“Right now the Talanta Hela Intercounty Play-offs are happening in Nyeri, and so we are assuring you of spreading the tournaments around and ensuring that all Kenyans have a chance to partake in this incredible high trajectory of sports.

Meanwhile, Namwamba was also grilled about the state of various stadia in Kenya, with a couple of senators asking him about the state of stadia such as Marsabit, the three proposed AFCON 2027 arenas, as well as the re-opening of Kiambu’s Kirigiti Stadium.

“I am assuring you that we have made all arrangements necessary to complete Marsabit Stadium. We are looking forward to completing the works and coming to open the stadium.”

“The stadia his excellency President William Ruto made an announcement on, stadia that started that then stalled, include this Marsabit Stadium that we went to Marsabit to inspect, then include Wote in Makueni, then include Kamariny.

“I want to report to this house that we have visited all the nine stadia, made an assessment of what needs to be done, and I am assuring you that completion of these nine stadia is a top priority for the ministry and for this administration.

“Our AFCON participation notwithstanding, we have placed a priority on completion of this stadia.

“Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu is one of our top facilities, constructed and completed. There are certain things that need to be sorted around Kirigiti, and I can inform you freely that as we close a number of stadia for preparation for AFCON, Kirigiti has been lined up to be among the stadia that will be very active while the stadia is closed for AFCON.

“Once the pending issues are sorted out, including the issue of track when they constructed Kirigiti, they used tarmac. They used bitumen on the track which was really not the right thing to do, and it needs to be removed so that you can have the right material on track.
