Benni McCarthy credits his Scottish wife, Stacey Munro for inspiring his successful transition from footballer to coach.
Bafana Bafana all-time top scorer Benni McCarthy has opened up about how his Scottish wife Stacey Munro contributed to his success as a coach.
The Harambee Stars coach transitioned from a striker to now one of the most successful African coaches and his wife has played a huge role in his track record.
His coaching stints include working with Cape Town City and AmaZulu FC in South Africa. He also worked as a striker coach for Manchester United. Benni McCarthy was unveiled as Harambee Stars coach early last month but if his wife had not intervened, he would have turned out differently.

Top 7 African Countries With the Most Olympic Medals
African countries have often stolen the spotlight on the world's grandest stage, accruing multiple Olympic medals, but which ones are the most decorated?
Benni McCarthy revealed that he was unsure about how his future would turn out but Stacey Munro encouraged him to take up coaching as he had become extremely knowledgeable about football as he worked as an analyst on TV.
He explained that he had to take up coaching lessons to avoid struggling if he landed a top job and admitted that they were a game changer. He entered every room with confidence, thanks to the courses he studied.
“My wife said to me, ‘Maybe this is what you should be doing. You’d still be in football, in and around with the players.’ I had missed the camaraderie of the change room plus the discipline it brings to your life and the competitive edge it gives you. My wife convinced me,” Benni McCarthy said in an interview with Forbes Africa.
“That’s when I decided to go and do my coaching badges because I didn’t want to be in a situation where people just do me favours because I was an ex-player. I felt I needed to educate myself and learn what I didn’t know.”

Before taking up coaching as full-time job, Benni McCarthy used to analyse football games and that is how he became invested in the sport.
The former West Ham United star revealed that he got to understand the game and the interest came naturally making it easier to transition into coaching.
He added that analysing the game gave him a chance to understand how club managers operated and people would support how he would explain different aspects of the game. Getting a go-ahead from his wife was everything he needed.

“Once I started working on TV as an analyst, I obviously started spending more time going through the teams a lot more thoroughly, learning more about them so that I would be able to analyze them better,” he said.
“I felt it came naturally, not knowing if it was because of my football background because I’d played and was familiar with team tactics.
“I found I was able to quickly figure out what sort of system the various managers wanted to play with the players they had at their disposal. People were very encouraging about my analysis, feeling it was on point.”
