As they retrieved to their technical area, one of the staff later identified as the goalkeeping coach was shown by TV replay to attack Mubiru who was standing in his technical area with a blow to his face.
Abdallah Mubiru was left lying flat on the floor and rushed to hospital after an attack by Mashujaa FC goalkeeping coach during their Tanzania Premier League relegation playoff on Saturday.
The incident took place in the late stages of the game between Mbeya City and Mashujaa FC at the Sokoine Stadium in Mbeya.
Following Mashujaa’s eventual winning goal in the 87th minute of the game, several Mashujaa staff joined goal scorer John Mudeba in celebration.
As they retrieved to their technical area, one of the staff later identified as the goalkeeping coach was shown by TV replay to attack Mubiru who was standing in his technical area with a blow to his face.
Mubiru went down catching his face, forcing a reaction from members of his technical staff and players, with medical staff attending to him.
It took over seven minutes before he was back to his feet, briefly returning to his technical bench before he was then rushed to hospital.
The referee took note of the incident and handed the culprit a red card, who was later escorted away as fans threatened to turn rowdy.
A family member to the coach explained to Pulse Sports that Mubiru was recovering in hospital where he is receiving treatment.
“The attack was very absurd, and I cannot understand why it has to happen during a game of football,” one of his sons who preferred anonymity explained.
“The blow was straight to his face, and the fact that he wears glasses these days, they were broken. We do not know how the damage is, but we have been told by club officials that he will be okay,”
“The broken glass did not affect his eyes though, but for us watching as a family, it was hard in that moment,” he added.
An official from the Tanzania Football Federation told Pulse Sports that they had taken note of the incident and will take the necessary action against the individual.
Mashujaa won the game 1-0 to gain promotion to the top flight after a 4-1 aggregate victory, ending Mbeya’s 12-year stay in the Tanzania Premier League.
