Moussa Niakhate Profile

After a youth career that saw Moussa Niakhate move through a host of clubs including Lille, Wasquehal U19 and Boulougne U19 in his formative years, the defender made his senior debut with Valenciennes after impressing with the club's B team.

After two seasons in the first team — 2015-16 and 2016-17 — in which he made 63 Ligue 2 appearances, Niakhate was signed by Ligue 1 side Metz and he made his top-flight debut away at Bordeaux on August 12, 2017. The defender played 34 more times in the 2017-18 Ligue 1 campaign before Bundesliga side Mainz signed him for €6 million.

The centre-back became a prominent member of the 05ers team over the next four campaigns, playing 128 times in the German top division. Niakhate was installed as the Carnival Club's captain in his fourth season, having worn the armband multiple times before that 2021-22 campaign.

“I'm very happy to have been given this honour. To be the captain of Mainz, it's truly an honour for me,” said the centre-back in September 2021.

The French-born centre-back earned a move to Premier League side Nottingham Forest in July 2022, signing a three-year contract in a deal worth up to €15 million (€10m plus add-ons of €5m).

Niakhate made his Premier League debut against Newcastle United in August 2022 but a hamstring injury limited the defender to just 14 league games in his debut season.

He played another 21 league matches in year two, taking him to 35 top-flight appearances for the Tricky Trees, before leaving for a hefty sum as Lyon made him their record signing after acquiring the defender for €31.9million (£27m/$34.38m).

Even though he did not feature for Aliou Cisse's men until his cameo against Mozambique in March 2023, Niakhate was initially invited to the Teranga Lions set-up in September 2022's friendly games against Bolivia and Iran.

Unfortunately, a hamstring injury ruled out the defender for several months, seeing him miss the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar.

Since appearing for the first time for the one-time African champions in AFCON qualifying, the centre-back has featured 11 times for the Lions of Teranga, making his debut at a major tournament at AFCON 2023 where defending champions Senegal exited to eventual winners Cote d’Ivoire.
