Moses Simon and Nantes travel to PSG hoping to improve on their season in Ligue 1 gameweek 26's most important fixture
Super Eagles forward, Moses Simon has not enjoyed the type of season he would have hoped for in coming in off the back of one of the best seasons in his career, but the 2022/23 season has been less than kind to Simon and Nantes as a whole.
The usually creative forward has been a shadow of himself in Ligue 1 this season, failing to find the spark that made him one of the most talked about players in Ligue 1 in the 2021/22 season.
Moses Simon and Nantes' underwhelming season
This season, Moses has battled poor form and injury, managing to assist only three goals in 32 games this season, compared to eight assists in 34 games last season.
More pertinently, Simon has created only three big chances in 21 Ligue 1 games this season, compared to 13 big chances in 30 matches last season.
He has also seen his expected assists per 90 minutes drop by 45.5%, from 0.33xA per 90 to only 0.15xA per 90 and in general, Simon has unfortunately failed to replicate his previous season form in any part of his game.
Like Simon, Nantes have also failed to build on their 2021/22 season, and have been largely disappointing in Ligue 1, as they have been spread thin by their European engagements in the European League.
Going into gameweek 26 last season, Nantes had already won 11 matches, but this season, they have won just over half of that and sit in 13th place as opposed to seventh at this point last season.
Nantes face PSG with Les Parisien in great spirits
To make matters worse, Nantes now have to pass the hardest test a Ligue 1 team could face, a trip to the Parc de Princes to take on PSG.
Facing PSG is a nightmare at any point, but having to face them in their current form is an agonising prospect for any club.
PSG appear to have overcome a mentally tough period of the season with the dramatic victory over Lille two weeks ago and have followed that up with a convincing 3-0 win over Marseille at the Velodrome.
Key to those victories have been Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, who are responsible for six of PSG’s seven goals in the last two games.
To get past PSG, Nantes will have to keep both of them quiet and hope that they can get the most creative version of Moses Simon.
Friday in Ligue 1
Terem Moffi will be looking to continue where he left off last game week as Nice take on Auxerre on Friday.
Moffi entered the PulseSports Team of the Week with his first two goals for Nice and will be hoping to add more goals this gameweek against Auxerre, who are currently just outside the relegation zone.
Saturday in Ligue 1
Saturday in Ligue 1 is highlighted by Nantes’ fixture against PSG, but there is also the Lens vs Lille fixture that sees fourth against sixth as the battle for European places heats up.
Sunday in Ligue 1
Monaco are in action on Sunday in Ligue 1 looking to improve their poor form against Troyes who have lost five league games in a row, while Montpellier also take on bottom-of-the-table Angers.
There are seven games in Ligue 1 on Sunday and none of them is bigger than fifth-place Rennes hosting second-place Marseille with only six points separating the two sides.
Folarin Balogun and Reims will also host Ajaccio, while Toulouse host Clermont in a midtable clash.
In this week’s relegation clash, 15th-place Strasbourg who have Habib Diallo firing on all cylinders will take on 18th-place Brest with two points separating the sides.
Lastly, Lyon in ninth-place will be hoping to leapfrog their Saturday opponents, Lorient, with a win at the Groupama Stadium.
