Mohammed Bajaber has become a cult hero after his starring role for Harambee Stars in March and he has been told what he must do to remain in the plans of coach Benni McCarthy.

Mohammed Bajaber continues to enjoy a great run since making his national debut during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March.

The Kenya Police attacker endeared himself to Kenyan football fans when he made his Harambee Stars debut with a great goal in the 3-3 draw against The Gambia before earning a place in the starting XI as they lost 2-1 at home to Gabon.

Since then, the attacking midfielder continues to attract plenty of attention and plaudits as the great form is also being witnessed at his club Kenya Police, where he has four goals in five games.

The 22-year-old has been advised to maintain the great form at club level if he wants to nail down a place in the Harambee Stars squad given the competition for places and the pressure coach Benni McCarthy is under to deliver positive results.

“Nothing is given in sport,” said Robert Muthomi, a director at Star Field Elite Academy, which nurtured Bajaber’s talents, told Pulse Sports.

“You must work hard everyday and he has to earn his position in the Harambee Stars under Benni McCarthy. Just because he was in the squad is not an assumption that he will always be in the squad,” Muthomi further said.

“He has to keep on proving to the coach everyday why he has to be in the squad because the coach and Kenyans are looking for results and at any one time, the coach will put together a squad that he believes will give him the results and he has to make sure that he is part of that squad.”

Muthomi is, however, confident that his protégé will not disappoint McCarthy, given his work ethic and character.

“Mohammed will always give 150 per cent on the field. He is a player who believes in hard work and is extremely disciplined, never late for a minute for team events, he is a player you can depend on,” added Muthomi.

“But also, as he grows in the Harambee Stars, they will be able to see that he has the leadership qualities and if he continues staying there, he is definitely a Harambee Stars captain in the future.”

Bajaber’s immediate task is firing Kenya Police to a maiden FKF Premier League title as they enjoy a one-point lead over Tusker FC, heading into the final nine games of the season.

He will hope to have done enough by the end of the season to convince McCarthy to hand him further call-ups with the 2024 African Nations Championships, which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania, the next key event.
