Wanyama remained on the bench for the second match in succession as Montreal lost 1-0 to FC Toronto.

Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama found himself on the bench for the second consecutive Major League Soccer (MLS) match as Toronto FC secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Montreal on Saturday night. Richie Laryea’s first-half goal proved decisive in the encounter.

Wanyama, who had captained Montreal in their previous weekend game against Atlanta United, was replaced by Samuel Piette for the midweek clash and remained on the sidelines once again against Toronto.

As an unused substitute, Wanyama was unable to influence the outcome of the match.

The pivotal moment came just five minutes before halftime when Lorenzo Insigne combined with Federico Bernardeschi to set up Laryea for a tap-in at the back post.

The goal marked a rare scoring opportunity in what was largely a defensive battle. Toronto finished the match with two shots on goal, while Montreal managed just one.

Despite their limited offensive output, Montreal came close to equalizing twice in the closing stages of the game. In the 80th minute, Bryce Duke's shot deflected off the crossbar, and shortly before regulation time ended, Josef Martinez found himself with a clear chance but failed to convert.

Toronto’s victory marked the first time they swept the season series with Montreal since 2019. The win also ended Montreal’s seven-game unbeaten streak at home. The all-time series between these rivals now stands at 16-14-5 in favor of Toronto.

The MLS will now take a break from regular-season play, with the All-Star Game scheduled for Wednesday in Columbus and the annual Leagues Cup running from Friday to August 25.

This hiatus may provide Wanyama and the Montreal coaching staff an opportunity to reassess his involvement and strategy for the upcoming matches.
