Kenyan referee Stephen Yiembe is the only one selected from East Africa to officiate at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and there is a big pay cheque awaiting him.
Kenyan referee Stephen Yiembe will fly East Africa’s flag at the 2025 FIFA Club World, having been selected for the month-long tournament, and he will be rewarded handsomely.
Yiembe is among 117 match officials, 13 from Africa, selected for the tournament by FIFA for the expanded 32-team event that will take place in the United States of America from June 14-July 13, with European giants Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Manchester City among the teams set to feature.
FIFA announced a list of 35 centre referees, 58 assistants and 24 video match officials – from 41 member associations, with Yiembe the only one from the East African region.
That tournament is just another feather in his cap, having officiated at major tournaments such as the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and Paris 2024 Olympics.

All centre referees will pocket a basic pay of around $70,000 (Ksh9 million) while assistant referees will earn in the region of $25,000 (Ksh3.2 million) in basic salary.

Kasarani To Host Test Matches From June as Kipchoge Keino Stadium Receives Major Boost
The Government has hinted at using the Kasarani Stadium starting June ahead of the CHAN tournament.
Centre referees will earn $3,000 (Ksh389,260) per match while their assistants take home $2,500 (Ksh324,384) per match and the figure can go to up to $10,000 (Ksh1.3 million) if a centre referee officiates the final while their assistants pocket up to $5,000 (Ksh648,768) at that level.
It means Yiembe, who is among the 58 assistant referees, is guaranteed Ksh3.2 million while he will earn an extra Ksh324,384 for every match he officiates at the tournament.
It has been a great year for the Nakuru-born referee, who is also among three Kenyan officials, who will take charge of the high stakes CAF Champions League semi-final tie between South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns and record winners Al Ahly of Egypt at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Saturday.
