Gor Mahia were among teams that lost out on almost Ksh100 million after their failure to qualify for the CAF Champions League group stage whose draw was conducted on Monday.

Confederation of African Football (CAF) conducted the Champions League and Confederation Cup group stage draw on Monday but no Kenyan side was involved.

This is after Gor Mahia were eliminated at the preliminary round by Egyptian giants Al Ahly, who are also the defending champions, following a 6-0 aggregate win last month.

Kenya Police, meanwhile, the country’s representatives in the Confederation Cup were knocked out by another Egyptian giant in the form of Zamalek following a 3-1 loss on aggregate.

With that, the Kenyan teams bid farewell to millions that come with making it to the group stages of the continental competition.

Group stage qualification now attracts a minimum of $700,000 (Ksh90 million) for Champions League teams while $400,000 (Ksh51 million) will go to Confederation Cup teams.

It means Gor Mahia would have walked away with at least Ksh90 million had they negotiated their way past Al Ahly and made it to the group stages while Police stood to pocket at least Ksh51 million had they gotten past Zamalek.

Champions League quarter-finalists will be rewarded $900,000 (Ksh116 million), $1.2 million (Ksh155 million) going to semi-finalists as runners up pocket $2 million (Ksh258 million). Champions League winners will go home with $4 million (Ksh516 million).

Confederation Cup quarter-finalists will each take home $550,000 (Ksh71 million), semi-finalists $750,000 (Ksh97 million), runners-ups $1 million (Ksh129 million) as winners pocket $2 million (Ksh258 million).

Both teams, however, took home $50,000 (Ksh6.5 million) each after CAF decided to start awarding prize money from the preliminary round to help teams in their preparations.
