Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has identified the club's top summer transfer target for the striker position.

Arsenal's striker position has been plagued with injuries and inconsistency between Kai Havertz and Gabriel  Jesus.

Both Havertz and Jesus are out for the remainder of the campaign, following separate injuries, leaving Arsenal with few options in attack.

In front of goal the German  has netted nine times in the league while Jesus only three times, which is abysmal for a title-chasing team.

In their absence Arteta has turned to midfielder Mikel Merino who has netted four times since being moved up top, bringing his season's tally to six goals.

Arsenal's points accrued has seen them fall behind in the title race with Liverpool comfortably in the driving seat.

This marks the third time the Gunners have fallen short in their title race aspirations having lost out to Manchester City the previous two seasons.

According to Sky Sports Arsenal have turned their attention to Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres to finally realize their title aspirations.

The Gunners have been long linked with the Swedish striker who has been on form for the Portuguese side.

Gyokeres has already matched his last season’s tally this campaign with 43 goals  in 42 appearances in all competition.

His goal scoring instincts might just be what Arsenal need to finally get over the line.

In their pursuit of Gyokeres, Arsenal have reportedly abandoned their chase of Newcastle Striker Alexander Isak who was seen as another viable option to their striking woes.
