Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga returned from injury playing a pivotal role in Al Duhail's recent Qatar Stars League win.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga made his long-awaited league return for Al Duhail in their 2-0 triumph over Al Wakrah in the Qatar Stars League.

Olunga featured prominently at the start of the match showcasing his sharp instincts before being substituted in the 55th minute following a yellow card received in the early stages of the game.

His substitution saw Sultan Al Brake take his place allowing Olunga to manage his minutes after a challenging period sidelined him due to injury.

The veteran striker’s comeback was highly anticipated as he had missed crucial fixtures including two 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Namibia along with several important matches for Al Duhail.

Despite not finding the back of the net himself, Olunga's presence on the field was instrumental in orchestrating Al Duhail's attacking plays.

His experience and leadership were evident as he directed the team's offensive strategies setting the stage for Edmilson Junior’s standout performance.

Edmilson delivered a stellar performance, netting a brace with his first goal arriving in the 13th minute. His second strike in the 27th minute further solidified Al Duhail’s dominance securing a comfortable lead that helped maintain their perfect start to the season with four consecutive wins and a maximum of 12 points.

The victory extends Al Duhail’s lead in the league standings placing them two points ahead of second-placed Al Ahli.

Reigning champions Al Sadd, who suffered an unexpected defeat against Umm Salal, now trail in third place with six points behind the leaders. Al Wakrah remains in seventh place with five points, having secured one win and two draws in their previous matches.

From the outset, the Red Knights pressed aggressively overwhelming Wakrah’s defense and capitalizing on their opportunities.

Edmilson’s first goal was a highlight reel moment with a superb curling shot from the edge of the box that left goalkeeper Mohammed al-Bakri with no chance. His second goal was equally impressive demonstrating his ability to navigate tight spaces and finish with precision.

Despite Al Duhail’s dominance, Al Wakrah showed resilience particularly in their defensive efforts during the first half preventing any additional goals before halftime.

The second half saw Al Duhail temporarily reduced to ten men when Ibrahima Diallo received a second yellow card for a rough tackle on Wakrah’s Hamdy Fathy. This numerical disadvantage allowed Al Wakrah to push forward in search of an equalizer, but Al Duhail's disciplined backline held firm, ensuring their victory.

Olunga’s return also highlights his importance to Al Duhail’s attacking lineup.

Since joining the club in January 2021, Olunga has been a prolific scorer, topping the club’s scoring charts and earning the golden boot award in both the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons.

His current form is impressive, having already scored a hat-trick in the opening game of the season against Qatar SC, where Al Duhail secured a commanding 6-1 victory.
