Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has lauded Kenyan fans for showing great support to Benni McCarthy’s team despite their loss to Gabon.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has expressed his admiration at Kenyans for showing the team great support during their World Cup qualifier against Gabon.

Kenya played an international match on home soil for the first time since November 2021 and the hunger was evident as Nyayo Stadium was sold out for the crucial encounter which Benni McCarthy’s team lost 2-1.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice for Gabon but Olunga pulled one back and it was an important goal for the Kenyan captain as it left him four shy of becoming the country’s all-time top scorer.

Olunga was, however, taken aback by the great support the team received, paying glowing tributes to Kenyans for giving Harambee Stars a big push.

“Thank you, KENYANS, for turning out in large numbers to support @Harambee__Stars. Despite the results (2-1) the team fought hard with resilience. I want to extend all my gratitude to everyone who made it a success. Asanteni sana 12th man. One Love KENYA,” Olunga posted on X.

That was hours after the game and on Monday, he was still in awe of the Kenyan fans.

“Always grateful for the support,” Olunga posted on his X account.

Olunga had a couple of opportunities that went begging before he scored in the second half after the victors had taken a 2-0 lead thanks to Aubameyang’s brace.

His strike took him to 32 goals on Kenya’s all-time top scorers list and he is now one behind AFC Leopards legend Elijah Lidonde, two adrift of Dennis Oliech, and three behind William Ouma.

The striker now needs to score four more for Harambee Stars to break the record and become Kenya’s leading scorer.
