Harambee Stars goalkeeper Ian Otieno has opened up on why he thinks it is nearly impossible to lure captain Michael Olunga away from Qatar.

Harambee Stars goalkeeper Ian Otieno does not believe Michael Olunga will leave Qatar any time soon due to the financial incentives in the Gulf.

Olunga has been the subject of interest from a number of clubs, including South African giants Kaizer Chiefs, who made an over ambitious enquiry in the off-season transfer window.

The Kenyan striker, however, enjoys cult status in Qatar when he plays for Al Duhail, and has become a club legend after moving ahead in their all-time top scorer’s list with 121 goals.

It means interested clubs would have to pay a premium to price him away from the Doha-based clubs but Otieno feels the striker has no intentions of leaving the Middle East nation soon.

"Michael's our national team's captain; we converse regularly. I have heard the murmurs about a potential move to Kaizer Chiefs, but honestly, I’m not sure," Otieno told South Africa outlet FARPost

"Arab money is something else; one can never predict what might occur in that realm. In the future, if Michael wishes to join the PSL, I'd gladly welcome him; it's a fantastic league.”

Olunga joined Al Duhail in January 2021 from Japanese side Kashiwa Reysol for a reported €6 million and has been a revelation since, winning the Golden Boot in back-to-back seasons while claiming the league title in 2022-23.

He has also won three cups during his stay at the club and made history when he became the club’s leading scorer with 121 goals in November.

The Harambee Stars captain has so far netted eight league goals this season as Al Duhail lead the standings with 25 points from 11 games, three ahead of champions Al Sadd ahead of next week’s league resumption.
