Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has expressed his unwavering commitment to Qatari club Al Duhail, giving reasons why he is not looking elsewhere at the moment.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has given an indication of his commitment to stay in Qatar after revealing why a move away won’t be happening soon.

Olunga has been in Qatar since January 2021, when he joined Al Duhail from Keshiwa Reysol of Japan, and became a club legend, having scored over 121 goals for the Doha-based side.

There has been interest from a number of clubs in Europe and beyond but a deal has never materialised as the striker seems settled in Qatar.

Olunga has opened up on how the financial incentives in the Middle East nation make it difficult to leave when he replied to a Kenyan fan who teased him over a return to his former team Gor Mahia.

“Kuja Gor on loan alafu ibil chan Feb ba (Come to Gor Mahia on loan then play CHAN 2024 in February),” the fan teased Olunga on X.

The striker was blunt in his reply, telling him that it was impossible as K’Ogalo cannot afford him now.

“Wages? Juu apartments lazima zisimame (we must continue building apartments),” the striker replied.

Olunga has recently been rumoured to be on the radar of South African giants Kaizer Chiefs although that appears to be a major stretch given the financial commitments that would be needed to make the deal happen.

The Harambee Stars skipper’s national team colleague Ian Otieno also explained why Olunga will not be leaving Qatar soon.

"Michael's our national team's captain; we converse regularly. I have heard the murmurs about a potential move to Kaizer Chiefs, but honestly, I’m not sure," Otieno told South Africa outlet FARPost in November.

"Arab money is something else; one can never predict what might occur in that realm. In the future, if Michael wishes to join the PSL, I'd gladly welcome him; it's a fantastic league.”

Olunga is believed to be the highest paid Kenyan player, reportedly on over Ksh6 million per week at Al Duhail, with his current market value being €8 million (Ksh1 billion) as per Transfermarkt.

He has continued doing his talking on the pitch as he has eight league goals for Al Duhail this season with Christophe Galtier’s team top of the Qatar Stars League table on 25 points, three more than champions Al Sadd.
