McKinstry has hailed the impact of the new centre-back, comparing his signing to that of Jonny Evans at Manchester United.

Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry has defended his decision to sign Kennedy 'Vidic' Onyango in the off-season, further explaining why he has formed the bedrock of his side’s defence this season.

Onyango signed for Gor Mahia from Nairobi City Stars, where he served as captain last season, and has been an ever-present figure for his new club, mostly getting partnered alongside young Joshua Onyango this season.

Speaking after his side’s 0-0 draw with Kenya Police last Sunday, McKinstry hailed the impact the towering defender has made since arriving at the club due to his experience which has rubbed onto his teammates.

“Kennedy has just got a lot of experience,” McKinstry said. “You cannot fault that,” he added.

“A lot of people always want the young player to come in and we have got a lot of young players as well, you look at Joshua Onyango who is having a great season so far as well.

“For Kennedy, he has been waiting for this opportunity and now he has got it, but is working hard and is leading that defence very well and you see he puts his body on the line and that is what you need some days.”

McKinstry has drawn comparisons of the signing to Manchester United last summer when they signed Jonny Evans as a free agent from Leicester City, a signing that left many puzzled given its odd nature.

“You look all over the world, you see Manchester United signed Jonny Evans this year and people were like, ‘Why have you signed Jonny Evans?’.

“You cannot replace experience, and so, Kennedy is a good part of our group but equally, it takes everybody. It is not just about him and he knows that as well."

Gor Mahia remain second on the log on 20 points after 10 matches played so far this season.

They will face high-flying Murang’a Seal in their next league match on Saturday.
