FOOTBALL Mathare's Odemba appointed Kenya U18 girls' team coach ahead of CECAFA tourney

The experienced tactician, who holds a CAF B license, has worked as an assistant coach with the national U17 and U20 girls' teams in the past.

Mathare United team manager Beldine Odemba has been appointed as the national U18 girls’ team head coach ahead of the upcoming CECAFA U18 tournament to be hosted by Kenya from June 24.

Odemba, who holds a CAF B license, has worked as an assistant coach with the national U17 and U20 girls' teams in the past.

The coach has also previously been on the technical bench of Kenya’s female football team, Harambee Starlets.

Last year, Odemba was also selected to be part of FIFA Coach Education Scholarship that offered financial support, network opportunities, mentorship and career development.

She has also coached the youth teams of several top-flight clubs, including Kariobangi Sharks and AFC Leopards. Odemba been critical in nurturing young talents and owing to her efforts, she was in 2019 shortlisted by World Remit as one of the continent’s coaches who have uplifted football in Kenya.

Odemba also led Highway Secondary School to the final of last year’s Federation of East African Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA). Unfortunately, they were edged out by Kibuli SS of Uganda, who won 2-0.

She brings with a wealth of experience from working with players at the infancy stages of their careers.

Mathare United congratulated Odemba for her milestone in a lengthy Facebook post.

A section of the post read: “Team Manager Beldine Odemba has been named as head coach for the Kenya U18 girls’ team that hit camp on Friday in preparation for the upcoming CECAFA U18 girls' tournament to be played in the country from June 24. Congratulations Abe.”

Meanwhile, selection is still ongoing as scouts will be heading over to Butere Girls School in the Western region, Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground in Nyanza and Shanzu TTC Grounds in Mombasa.

Over 50 young girls turned up for the exercise at the Stima Club Grounds in Nairobi on Friday.
