Mathare United have appealed to all well wishers to help fund club founder and chairman Bob Munr’s medical costs .

Munro underwent three surgeries at the Aga Khan Hospital in October and November 2023 after experiencing some serious health issues.

The long-standing administrator is now recovering well at his home but  is experiencing limited mobility and chronic physical/mental fatigue.

In a statement released by the club’s social media pages, Munro’s family has made a rallying call for support in his time of need

“The costs of the surgeries have seriously drained Bob’s family's financial resources,” the statement read.

“Despite support from a few friends, who ensured that the surgeries took place, Bob remains with a significantly high medical bill he must settle.

“As we all know, Bob and his wife Ingrid Munro have sacrificed their lives to benefit the poor kids of Mathare and its environs.

“The two have inspired us all and we all, in one way or another, attribute our success to their sacrifices. Friends, Bob has exhausted all his resources and this is a rallying call to support him in his time of need.”

A Safaricom Paybill Number 8055789 and account  0100005185755 has been set up for friends and well wishers to help raise funds to clear his medical bill amounting to KES. 3.5 million.

Munro was born in Canada but has been living in Kenya since 1985. He worked as a United Nations rapporteur for the first UN Conference on the Human Environment (UNCHE), held in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972.

He also served as a senior policy adviser for the 1987 World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), which made sustainable development, a top local and  global policy priority.

In 1987, he founded the Mathare Youth Sports Association as a community development organization in the slums of Nairobi, which soon became the global pioneer for the now worldwide movement on sport for development and peace.
