Mason Greenwood’s chances of playing for England are over but there is still a chance for him to play international football.

Mason Greenwood’s chances of playing for England are effectively over after interim manager Lee Carsley confirmed that he not under any consideration.

Greenwood has been on force at his club new Marseille where he has bagged five goals in his first three games to move top of the top scorer’s charts in Ligue 1.

The forward joined Marseille on a permanent transfer from Manchester United, having spent last season on loan at La Liga side Getafe and has taken little time to make his presence felt.

That has seen the player earn high reviews with his international future also brought into the spotlight.

“Mason wasn’t a player that we can consider right now,” Carsley said when asked about the forward’s international future. “We are aware of how he is doing but he wasn’t under any consideration.”

Greenwood has only made one appearance for England, coming in 2020 when he was just emerging at Manchester United, but he would later spend 18 months out of the game having been charged with attempted rape, assault, and coercive behaviour in January 2022 after a series of harrowing images and voice recordings were shared online.

That saw him suspended by United but the charges were dropped on February 2023 by the Crown Prosecution Service following the withdrawal of key witnesses, allowing him to return.

United opted against integrating him into the squad and loaned him out to Getafe where he impressed before the Premier League club cashed in with the sale to Marseille.

Greenwood is, however, believed to have known that his England chances are over and is exploring the possibility of playing for Jamaica.

Jamaica coach Steve McClaren I believed to be considering offering Greenwood an international lifeline and the player is also said to be interested in representing his father’s country.
