FKFPL Mashemeji Derby: Omala and key Gor Mahia players for AFC Leopards battle

Pulse Sports dissects K’Ogalo’s squad and identifies stars that are set to play crucial roles.

Mashemeji Derby heat is fast generating as Gor Mahia are set to host AFC Leopards on Sunday at Nyayo Stadium.

Whereas, practically, the match is more important to Gor Mahia than AFC Leopards, Ingwe are not going to let their opponents have an easy time during the showdown.

Gor Mahia want the points as they are engaged in a tight fight for the Premier League title with Tusker. On the other hand, Leopards are not in contention, and their coach, Patrick Aussems, has affirmed that their focus lies elsewhere.

However, being the derby and bragging rights up for grabs, Ingwe have something to fight for in this showdown.

So, who among the players set to take on Ingwe are key for Gor Mahia?

Gad Mathews

He has regularly started for the record champions and will maintain his slot come Sunday, barring any injury.

Gad would hope to keep a clean sheet in order to increase his tally. Being one of the more experienced players on his side, the custodian is seen as one of the key players who carries the hopes of K’Ogalo in the derby.

Philemon Otieno

Being the captain, he carries extra duties as he is going to lead Gor Mahia during the crucial duel should he start.

While he can join the attacking force when the situation demands, Otieno needs to be extra alert and ensure he is not caught off guard should Leopards launch swift counter-attacks.

Ernest Wendo

His experience will come in handy, especially in the midfield battle.

Wendo’s physicality and intimidating presence are expected to hand K’Ogalo an advantage over their arch-rivals.

However, he should be keen not to make reckless tackles that can easily see him sent off, consequently handing Ingwe a numerical advantage.

Austin Odhiambo

Another chance for Odhiambo to face his former side and maybe come out on top.

His creativity and speed will be important in opening up the Leopards’ backline. But should the away side decide to mark him relentlessly, this might shut down Gor Mahia’s key source of supply.

Benson Omala

This game is very important for the former Kisumu Day student; he is looking to score and help Gor Mahia win, and goals will increase his season tally.

Although he is leading the Golden Boot race with a clear margin, he needs not to rest, as more goals in the season will help him register a record that might not be broken easily in the near future.
