Liverpool is preparing for the potential departure of club captain Virgil van Dijk at the end of the season.

According to liverpool.com the Reds have compiled a four-man shortlist of defenders to fill the formidable void left by the Dutch stalwart.

With van Dijk’s contract set to expire at the end of the season and no new deal in sight, the club is keen to identify suitable replacements for the iconic center-back.

1. Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace)

Marc Guehi has emerged as a prime target for Liverpool following his impressive performances for both club and country. The 24-year-old defender has become a key player for Crystal Palace and shone during England's Euro 2024 campaign.

Although Liverpool hesitated over Guehi’s substantial $93 million (£70 million) price tag this past transfer window, they remain interested. With his contract running until 2026, there’s hope that Palace may be open to negotiation, potentially allowing the Reds to secure him at a more manageable fee next summer.

2. Gonçalo Inácio (Sporting CP)

Sporting CP’s Gonçalo Inácio is another top contender on Liverpool’s radar. At just 23 years old, Inácio has consistently impressed in the Primeira Liga and has drawn attention for his composure and defensive acumen.

With a $67 million (£50 million) release clause, he offers a balance of youth and experience, making him an attractive long-term replacement for van Dijk. Liverpool could be more inclined to activate this clause, viewing Inácio as a future cornerstone of their defence.

3. Gleison Bremer (Juventus)

Brazilian international Gleison Bremer, currently playing for Juventus, brings a wealth of European experience and a strong physical presence to the table. At 27, he is entering his peak years, making him a solid option.

However, his contract runs until 2029, and Juventus are likely to demand around $78 million (£59 million) for his services. While Liverpool has shown interest, they may opt for younger talent unless the price becomes more palatable.

4. Loïc Badé (Sevilla)

Loïc Badé has been making waves in La Liga and is viewed as a rising star in French football. The 24-year-old showcased his talents at the 2024 Summer Olympics and has become a key figure for Sevilla.

Recently extending his contract until 2029, Badé has a release clause set at $56 million (£42 million). Liverpool will likely attempt to negotiate a lower price should they pursue him, given his potential to develop into a top-tier center-back in the coming years.

With the future of Virgil van Dijk hanging in the balance, Liverpool is clearly planning for the eventual transition in their defense.

Each of the four candidates brings unique qualities to the table, and any of them could provide the necessary stability and skill to fill the shoes of one of the club's all-time greats.
