Manchester United kicked off their Premier League campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Fulham, thanks to a decisive late goal from debutant Joshua Zirkzee.

The win marks United’s 22nd record-extending opening day triumph in top-flight history, but the performance left much to be desired.

The anticipation at Old Trafford was palpable before the match, with new signings Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt, and Noussair Mazraoui all showcased to the crowd.

However, despite the buzz surrounding the new arrivals, the game was a testament to the challenges still facing Erik ten Hag’s squad.

Fulham posed a serious threat early on, with André Onana making a crucial save to deny Kenny Tete’s powerful long-range attempt.

United’s response came through Casemiro, who, despite some promising buildup with Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo, failed to convert his chances, including a notable miss following Bernd Leno’s short clearance.

Bruno Fernandes also tested Leno, but the Fulham goalkeeper’s sharp reflexes kept the scoreline level.

Leno continued to be a standout performer, thwarting several attempts from United, including a save from Mount and a crucial intervention to prevent Fernandes from scoring.

Meanwhile, on the defensive end, Lisandro Martínez made a vital goal-line clearance to keep Andreas Pereira from breaking the deadlock for Fulham.

As the match progressed, United’s attacking inefficiencies were evident.

Alejandro Garnacho’s cross, intended for Marcus Rashford, was intercepted by Tete, and Garnacho himself missed a glaring chance to add to the scoreline late in the game.

The breakthrough finally came in the 87th minute when Zirkzee, who had been introduced just past the hour mark, finished expertly from Garnacho’s cross.

The goal provided a much-needed boost for United, ensuring a victory despite the team's overall lackluster performance.

Fulham could feel aggrieved not to have secured a draw, given their resilience and several close calls.

However, United’s win, while hard-fought, highlighted areas for improvement as they look to establish themselves as serious title contenders this season.

The match also underscored the need for more clinical finishing and defensive solidity, as Ten Hag’s side prepares for the challenges ahead in the Premier League.
