‘I’m embarrassed for him’ - Ten Hag slammed for remarks about Manchester United stay
Ex-Chelsea player Craig Burley has criticised Ten Hag for believing he is the best man to lead the Red Devils.
The Dutch manager was under pressure after a disappointing 2023-24 campaign that saw the Red Devils finish eighth in the Premier League, exit the Champions League in the group stage after finishing bottom of their group and losing to Newcastle United in the EFL Cup fourth round.
Ten Hag was rumoured to be heading out of Old Trafford regardless of the outcome of May’s FA Cup final against Manchester City, a match claimed by the Red Devils at Wembley Stadium.
An extended review of the Dutchman’s position at the club ended last week, with the former Ajax boss remaining in situ for next term while a new contract is said to be in the offing.
Mainoo is relieved that Manchester United chose continuity with Ten Hag instead of starting over with a new manager, noting the 54-year-old’s achievements in two campaigns in England.

“I am obviously happy to keep building with him, he has won two trophies and there are more to come,” Mainoo said. “It is nice to have the peace of mind that we know what manager we are going back to for pre-season.”
“I am so grateful for him that he put his trust in me and believed in me to play in the team,” the United player continued. “I can’t thank him enough.”
What comes next?
Mainoo is with the England squad at Euro 2024, making his tournament debut in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Serbia in Gelsenkirchen.
The midfield man should return to the club for pre-season after his extended holiday following the Three Lions’ participation in Germany.
