Manchester United legend gets headbutted after loss to Arsenal

The former Manchester United captain had to be protected by fellow pundit Micah Richards

During Manchester United’s 3-1 loss to Arsenal on Sunday, Red Devils legend Roy Keane suffered an attack by a fan while on duty for Sky Sports.

Keane covered the Arsenal versus Manchester United game as one of the pundits for the broadcast network but was accosted at the Emirates Stadium as he took an elevator to get to his duty post towards the end of the game. 

According to the Daily Mail, the former Manchester United captain was accosted by a fan who headbutted him in the chin and chest before he was stopped by Keane’s co-pundit and former Manchester City defender Micah Richards.

The alleged attacker escaped immediate repercussions as he left the area of the incident before security was called to intervene. 

Police to investigate alleged assault on Keane

After the footage of Richards confronting the alleged attacker surfaced, Sky released a statement explaining the scenario, noting that the former Manchester City defender had been acting in defence of his pundit colleague, who was ambushed and that the incident would be investigated by police. 

Their statement read, “We understand the police are investigating an alleged assault by a member of the public immediately preceding the footage circulating on social media. 

“In the footage seen, Micah Richards was acting to defuse a situation.”

London's Met Police also noted that they would be investigating the incident, saying, “Police are investigating following an assault that is alleged to have occurred at the Emirates Stadium during an Arsenal v Manchester United match on Sunday, 3 September.”

After the alleged assault, Keane’s day went from bad to worse as Manchester United went on to lose to Arsenal with two late goals.
