Club legend Gary Neville believes that parting ways with Rashford in January could be the key to unlocking a new era for the Red Devils.
His comments come after United’s disappointing loss to Bournemouth, with Rashford absent from the squad for the third consecutive game under manager Ruben Amorim.
Neville wary of Rasfhford distraction at Manchester United
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville did not hold back in assessing Rashford’s situation, labelling the 27-year-old forward a “distraction” for the team.
Omitted from matchday squads against Manchester City, Tottenham, and now Bournemouth, Rashford’s exclusion appears to signify a breaking point between the player and his club.
“If you’d asked me a week ago whether Rashford could leave in January, I’d have said no chance,” Neville remarked, adding, “But when a player becomes the focal point of press conferences and discussions, it’s clear that something has to change.”
Neville compared Rashford’s situation to players like Jadon Sancho and Scott McTominay, who found new success after leaving United, suggesting that a transfer could benefit both Rashford and the club.
Neville backs Amorim’s treatment of Rashford
Neville also expressed support for Amorim’s handling of Rashford’s situation. “For 10 years, we’ve seen the same players deliver the same results,” he said before adding, “Ruben Amorim is protecting himself and doing the right thing for the club by leaving Rashford out.”
Rashford’s contributions to Manchester United since his debut in 2016 have been significant, with 138 goals in 426 appearances and multiple trophies, including the Europa League and FA Cup.
However, Neville and others believe that his time at Old Trafford may have run its course after the England international’s public declaration about needing a new challenge.
With Rashford reportedly open to a “new challenge,” a January move could help reignite his career and boost his chances of returning to the England squad. Despite being under contract until 2028 on a lucrative deal, his departure may now seem like the logical next step for both parties.
