Officials from Manchester United's medical team are 'actively' inquiring to see whether there are any 'patterns' in a bid to help allay the ongoing fitness issues.

Manchester United have launched an internal investigation into the excessive amount of injuries that Erik ten Hag's team have sustained so far this campaign.

The former Ajax coach has overseen the club's worst start to a season in 37 years, but United's extensive injury list is a major mitigating factor behind those poor results.

16 players are already unavailable due to injury, which has left Ten Hag seriously concerned ahead of a crucial couple of fixtures next months.

Summer signings Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount have both spent time on the sidelines meaning Ten Hag has not yet been able to name his preferred starting XI. And it now seems as though the club are set to dig deeper to try and uncover the reasons why.

According to a new report from The Mail, officials from United's medical team are 'actively' inquiring to see whether there are any 'patterns' in a bid to help allay the ongoing fitness issues.

Most of the injuries are muscular related, which has left the club with not choice but to seek answers to abate the problem.

United staff are attempting to determine whether or not those injuries have been sustained due to the high volume of games last year with the World Cup or if other reasons are to blame.

The club hired Arsenal's former Arsenal doctor Gary O’Driscoll in the summer to fill a similar role at Old Trafford. He only officially started the role a week ago.

Speaking last month, Ten Hag admitted that he was concerned by the amount of injuries sustained by his side.

"One thing is true, from the start of last season I almost never started with the best starting XI, it was always something like an injury.

"But you have to deal with it and we always get the results, apart from the period we are in now. It's a concern but that's why we constructed the squad with depth, so we can deal with it. The squad can deal with it.

"Injuries always come in top football because we're living on the edge and injuries are coming up. We analyse why things happen but we also have to deal with the facts and it's always about the players available. We have a strong side and we have to get the best out of it."
