Phil Foden was the man of the match as Manchester City defeated noisy neighbours Manchester United in the derby

Manchester City’s Phil Foden was the star of the show as Manchester United secured a comeback win over neighbours Manchester United.

Marcus Rashford gave Manchester United the oead, but Foden’s brace and a late goal from Erling Haaland secured all three points for the hosts.

How it happened

Rashford opened the scoring for Manchester United with an absolute rocket from well over 25 yards that left Ederson helpless in goal for Manchester City.

Try as they did, Manchester City were unable to find an equaliser going into the break despite having 17 shots on goal and 73% of the possession in the first half.

The visitors put up a water tight defence, regularly having the majority of their squad behind the ball as they sought to keep the Manchester City barrage of attacks at bay. They succeeded in that respect, with only three of the Cityzens’ 17 shots on goal finding their way to goalkeeper Andre Onana.

After starting the second half inflicting more pressure on the Manchester United goal, the CItyzens eventually pulled level thanks to a Phil Foden screamer, as the Manchester City academy graduate scored his 17th goal of the season in all competitions, setting a new personal best.

As the game ebbed towards a stalemate, Foden stamped his authority on the match with his second goal of the game which was the eventual winner.

Foden’s strike was also his sixth against Manchester United, making them his favourite opponents alongside Brentford, who he has also scored six goals against.

Haaland was on hand to put the cherry on top of Manchester City’s comeback win with his goal in the first minute of extra time.
