The defeat means Everton – who barely tested the Citizens - remain in the relegation dogfight.

Manchester City took a giant step towards defending the Premier League title after a 3-0 win over Everton on Sunday.

Ilkay Gundogan’s brace and a goal from Erling Haaland were enough for City to claim a win and a clean sheet at Goodison Park.

After struggling to get past Everton’s backline, City finally got a breakthrough in the 37th minute and scored. Riyad Mahrez curled the ball to where Gundogan was waiting, and the German poked a flicked finish with his back to goal. City needed a piece of brilliance from Gundogan to break the deadlock.

Haaland, who had struggled in the opening minutes, added the second goal for City just two minutes after the opener was registered.

Gundogan was involved again as he made a brilliant move down the left before he spotted Haaland, who was waiting for the cross. The Norwegian rose high above Mason Holgate and headed past Jordan Pickford in the 39th minute.

Gundogan made this game his moment to shine when he scored again in the 51st minute. With a well-taken freekick, the German was able to caress the ball over the wall and past Pickford for City’s third.

A City chance to get the fourth came at the hour mark when Phil Foden sped down the left wing and delivered a cross to the back post, but Haaland could not score as his attempted acrobatic finish went wide.

The referee dismissed penalty appeals from City in the 75th minute after Pickford’s reckless challenge on Haaland. The City forward chased a loose ball, but the Everton goalkeeper ran all over Haaland, who hit the deck in the process.

With the points and victory all but secured, Pep Guardiola made changes in the 77th minute, with match winners Haaland and Gundogan withdrawn as Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish came on.

Kalvin Phillips was thrown into action in the 88th minute as Rodri made way for another change by Guardiola.
