Scott McTominay played the role of super-sub, scoring two goals in injury time to help Manchester United defeat Brentford 2-1.
Manchester United a brace from super-sub Scott McTominay to come back from a goal down and defeat Brentford 2-1 at Old Trafford.
How it happened
Manchester United and particularly Erik ten Hag, needed a win to calm the nerves around Old Trafford in recent weeks.
However, Thomas Frank’s Brentford side got off to a better start, with Aaron Hickey sending a long-range effort within a whisker of the top corner.
Just as United were coming into the game, they conceded due to a combination of errors.
Casemiro gave the ball away in his own half, allowing the Bees to pounce and break forward, and then a loose ball in the box was steered goalwards by Mathias Jensen, and André Onana could only get a weak hand to it - compounding his poor start as a United goalkeeper.
With 20 minutes left, United started to push for an equaliser, first Bruno Fernandes tried his luck from range but his drilled effort was palmed away by Strakosha, and then Alejandro Garnacho saw a fizzing shot from inside the box fly over the bar.
Finally, substitute Scott McTominay capitalised on a goalmouth scramble to fire home the equaliser and within four minutes of netting the leveller, McTominay had struck again to steal victory.
