Manchester City won 6-2 on aggregate to advance into the quarter-final of the Champions League.
Manchester City continued their march towards title defence as they overcame the challenge of Copenhagen with minimal fuss to advance into the next round.
The Cityzens came into the clash with an advantage, after beating the Danish side 3-1 in the first leg. They matched the result in front of their home crowd at the Etihad Stadium, to advance 6-2 on aggregate.
How it happened
Manchester City scored early in the tie to dispel all doubts of a possible equaliser. They were turned on from kick-off, instigating several onslaughts on the Copenhagen end of the pitch.
City’s early pressure bore fruit before the clock struck five minutes, and it came from a set piece. Julian Alvarez crossed the ball into the 18-yard area from the corner kick spot, and Akanji left unattended to, coolly sidefooted home.
The second goal came about four minutes later, with the Argentine World Cup winner, Alvarez, turning scorer after being a provider earlier.
The 25-year-old's powerful striker, from the edge of the box on the visitors' right flank, beat the weak hands of Kamil Grabara to nestle at the back of the net.
Copenhagen clawed one back midway through the half when Orii Stein Oskarsson’s backheel pass set up Mohamed Elyounnousi, who in turn beat the rooted Ederson.
Haaland restored City's two-goal cushion just before half-time, cutting two, before beating the goalkeeper at the near post.
City dropped the tempo in the second-half, and saw out the game, adding no more to the scoreline. They won 6-2 on aggregate and will now join Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain as teams that have advanced into the next round of this year’s European elite’s showpiece.
