A Manchester City player was on the end of a physical assault when he was slapped in the face by a Manchester United supporter following Sunday’s Manchester Derby.

Manchester United and Manchester City’s Premier League meeting on Sunday lacked a spark on the pitch but off it, there was something to talk about.

United and City played out a drab goalless draw when both sides showcased what is ailing them this season with a toothless display that was not so good on the eye.

However, after the match, City midfielder Jack Grealish was reportedly the subject of a physical assault from a United fan.

A 20-year-old man has been charged for the assault on Grealish and will appear at the Manchester Magistrates' Court in July.

"Alfie Holt, 20, of Haven Drive, Droylsden, has been charged with assault. He will appear at Manchester Magistrates Court,” said a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police.

"This charge relates to an incident which took place at Old Trafford Football Club yesterday [Sunday]."

Both clubs are yet to comment publicly on the incident although police launched a probe immediately, leading to the arrest.

Phil Foden's mum also targeted by United fans

Phil Foden had his mum abused by Man United fans on Sunday.

The assault came shortly after United fans had targeted City forward Phil Foden’s mum with some vile chants that were later condemned by manager Pep Guardiola.

"It was a lack of class. We are so exposed in football — managers, owners and football players especially,” said Guardiola.

"I don’t understand the mind of the people involving the mum of Phil. It’s a lack of integrity, class, and they should be ashamed.”

This is the second case of assault on Grealish, during or after a match, following on another incident in 2019 when a Birmingham fans attacked him from behind when he was playing for Aston Villa.
