Luis Suárez has declared his retirement from international duty. The iconic forward will step away from the national team following Uruguay’s World Cup qualifier against Paraguay this Friday, capping a distinguished 17-year international career.

Suárez, who has been an emblematic figure for La Celeste, made the announcement at a news conference on Monday.

At 37 years old, the decision to retire comes as Suárez feels the time is right to move on, rather than being forced out by injury or diminishing performance.

His departure marks the end of an illustrious chapter in Uruguay’s footballing history, with Suárez leaving behind a legacy as the nation's all-time leading goal scorer.

“I am at peace with this decision,” Suárez stated, visibly emotional. “It’s difficult to step away, but I am confident this is the right moment. I want to retire on my own terms, knowing I gave everything I had until the very end.”

Suárez made his debut for Uruguay on February 8, 2007, in a 3-1 win over Colombia, and quickly became a central figure in the squad. His contributions were pivotal in Uruguay’s journey to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, where he played a crucial role in the team’s run to the semifinals.

Perhaps most famously, Suárez’s controversial handball in the dying moments of the quarterfinal against Ghana remains one of the tournament's most talked-about moments. Despite his dismissal, Uruguay advanced after a penalty shootout.

Throughout his career, Suárez participated in four World Cups (2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022) and five Copa Américas (2011, 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024).

His performance in the 2011 Copa América was particularly memorable; Suárez scored in the final to help Uruguay secure the title, a moment he still cherishes deeply. “Winning the Copa América in 2011 was the most beautiful moment of my career,” Suárez reflected. “I wouldn’t trade that for anything.”

His last appearance for Uruguay came in the 2024 Copa América, where he contributed to the team’s third-place finish with a decisive penalty in the shootout against Canada. Suárez’s impact on the national team has been profound for his goal-scoring prowess, his leadership and determination.

Currently with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, Suárez has continued to demonstrate his exceptional talent. His recent performances for Miami, including scoring twice in their 4-1 victory over Chicago Fire FC, underscore that he remains a formidable force on the field.

His retirement from the national team marks the end of a significant chapter in Uruguay's football history, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

Luis Suárez’s departure from international football leaves a lasting impact, but his career and achievements will forever be remembered as a testament to his dedication and excellence in the sport.
