Rising Stars will face Sierra Leone, Zambia and defending champions Senegal in the 2025 U-20 AFCON set to take place in Cote d'Ivoire in April

St Antony's Kitale head coach Peter Mayoyo wants Kenyan fans to be patient with the Rising Stars side that is set to take part in the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set to take place in Ivory Coast this April.

Rising Stars under the guidance of coach Salim Babu, are in Group C , which comprises reigning champions Senegal, regulars Zambia and much-improved Sierra Leone for the biennial show.

Mayoyo said Rising Stars must embrace the underdog tag owing to the quality of the opposition and past achievements. Senegal in particular, is a footballing powerhouse in the continent.

“Most of the teams in the two regions have players playing abroad hence they have the experience to dominate teams from our region. With the exposure opponents have, I want to urge our boys to prepare without pressure and also urge our fans to lower their expectations,” Mayoyo told Citizen Digital.

Mayoyo also revealed the challenge facing coach Salim Babu. Babu is likely to face selection dilemma because the team's preparation runs in tandem with the school calendar as most of the players are students.

“Most of the top quality players in the team are still in school and by the time the tournament is taking place some will be in school. Just like it happened for the Junior Starlets during last year’s World Cup, so it’s a selection headache for the technical bench.

“The lucky ones who have the chance to join some football clubs are not getting enough playing time because of the level of competition so it’s another challenge.”

Kenya and Tanzania booked the two slots reserved for the CECAFA region after the qualifiers in October 2024, in Dar es Salaam. Four top teams will book tickets for the U-20 2025 World Cup in Chile set for September.
